“Back in 1969, when It Happened in Boston? first appeared, one reviewer suggested that the question mark at the end of the title might more appropriately be moved to the middle: It Happened? in Boston. After all, just look at some of the events the book described: a whole stream of time trips, numerous conversations with Satan, and (at the plot’s very center) the narrator’s sustained and completely serious effort to meet up with God Himself in person...Apart from its originality and complexity, it has that most exhilarating of qualities: the power to reawaken our sense of life’s possibilities.”
